Question about bed bugs?

My boyfriend bought this great vintage arm chair that has velvet cushions on it. He got it from some sort of vintage/thrift store place, although I don't know exactly the name. Anyway since is is presumably pre-owned, I am kind of afraid to sit on it - how do I know if there are bed bugs in it or something? I thought thats the very reason you aren't supposed to buy furnature that is pre-owned. Should I be worried? I live in Canada if that makes a difference.
